Behind the Scenes: A Day in the Life of a Private Medical Insurance Broker

Most people think of private medical insurance as a policy you buy and hopefully never need. But behind every policy is a maze of choices, jargon, underwriting rules, and fine print that can make the process feel overwhelming. That’s where brokers come in.

As a private medical insurance (PMI) broker, my role is to take that weight off your shoulders. Today, I’d like to pull back the curtain and show you what a typical day looks like in my world—and how that work translates into better cover, clearer decisions, and often real savings for clients like you.

8:00 AM – Starting with Clients in Mind

First things first: I check emails and voicemails. Often, there are messages from clients who’ve received their renewal letters and want to know if the price hike is fair—or if it’s time to move. Others might be dealing with a claim and need guidance.

I also review health questionnaires for new clients. Every situation is different: a self-employed client recovering from surgery, a young family expecting a baby, or someone with a pre-existing condition unsure what’s covered.

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution in this work, and that’s exactly why brokers are so valuable.

10:00 AM – Research, Comparisons, and Insurer Calls

By mid-morning, I’m deep into the details:

  • Comparing quotes from Bupa, AXA Health, Aviva, WPA, Vitality, and others.

  • Checking policy wording for hospital lists, excess levels, outpatient limits, and how mental health support is handled.

  • Calling underwriters to clarify grey areas—especially for medical history that doesn’t fit neatly into a tick-box form.

The public doesn’t usually get access to this level of detail, and certainly not without hours of their own research.

My job is to filter out the noise and present clear, honest recommendations.

12:30 PM – Lunch Break (Sort Of)

While I try to take a lunch break, I often find myself listening to insurer webinars or skimming new provider updates.

The PMI landscape changes fast: a new digital GP service here, a tweak to an underwriting rule there.

Staying current isn’t optional—it’s how I make sure my clients are always getting the most suitable advice, not just what worked last year.

2:00 PM – Consultations and Renewals

Afternoons are usually spent on calls or Zoom chats with clients.

  • A family might want to add a newborn to their plan.

  • A business owner could be reviewing their group scheme after staff changes.

  • A retiree may be looking to scale back their cover without losing essential benefits.

We review their existing plan and compare alternatives. I explain what’s changed, what their options are, and how each choice affects their access to care and long-term costs.

This is where clients often say, “I never would have figured this out on my own.” That’s the goal.

4:30 PM – Paperwork, Problems, and Progress

The final stretch of the day is often where the least glamorous but most important work happens. I:

  • Submit applications

  • Chase insurers for underwriting decisions

  • Follow up on client queries

  • Help resolve claims or billing issues

This is the invisible side of brokering—but it’s also the part where having a broker really proves its worth. When there’s a problem, you’ve got someone on your side who speaks the insurer’s language.

Why Working with a Private Medical Insurance Broker Is Worth It

No two days are the same, and no two clients are either. But the satisfaction is constant:

Helping people feel more confident about their health cover and knowing they’ve made the right choices for their situation.

Whether it’s saving someone £1,000 on their renewal or finding a plan that finally covers their needs, the work is meaningful—and it matters.
